DIRECTING

Directing other's Work,
Directing My OWN Work

General Approach

A director's job can can contain many different roles- producer, author, co-devisor, designer, choreographer, dramaturge, manager, teacher, coach, mentor. Whether I am working for a company or to realise my own vision, my approach to directing is collaborative rather than hierarchical. If working within conventional formats, the job is to find more originality by playing with objects, materials and performer's ideas, at other times it is to make difficult, experimental ideas more accessible.   Either way it is a process of shared discovery.

I have my own tastes but I am careful to  keep those within my own work (see sub-section on Vision) rather than impose them on others (see range within sub-section on Bespoke Directing). Because I have worked in a wide range of contexts and styles, indoor and outdoor, experimental and popular, small-scale and large scale, I am able to offer a view that is not limited by narrow perspectives.
