CIRCOMEDIA
I co-founded this school in 1994 and have been the Artistic and Educational Director since then, as well as Course Director for the Foundation Degree and BA (Hons) courses. I no longer teach acrobatics and mainly focus on physical theatre, clown, masks, grotesque, devising and theory. Recently I have been developing the proposed MA in Directing for Circus due to launch in October 2016.
From the outset we founded the school on three key principles:
1) the performer as primary creator of their work
2) the integration of circus with theatre
3) a holistic approach to education - intellectual and emotional development as well as physical
These principles have wide artistic and educational implications. They encourage autonomy and diversity of approach, creating and re-creating new interpretations and forms with each generation. For us the impact of circus technique could be used effectively to communicate ideas, feelings and themes. Theatre can be much more than character-based narrative; we sought to bring young people to the peak of their capabilities in order to empower them to maintain a continual exploration of myriad combinations of techniques, including dance, writing, and design.
